Join us for the opening reception of “Owls and Antlers…Wisdom and Strength,” a profound quilt exhibition by renowned artist Penny Sisto. Created in the wake of a life-altering heart attack, these quilts reflect Penny’s deep gratitude for life, family, friends, and the practices that sustain the spirit\u2014art and yoga. Each piece in this collection is a testament to the wisdom we seek and the strength we muster as we navigate the winding paths of life.<\/p>\n

K\u00fcnstler-Statement<\/strong><\/p>\n

It seems odd to give Thanks for a heart-attack..but that is what I do.<\/p>\n

Standing in the studio, suddenly hit with the worst pain of this lifetime I was drenched in sweat and for some reason I knew immediately what it was and I laid my body down on the cold floor of the studio and steadied my breath.<\/p>\n

Realizing that I had to get help quickly I slowly slid my body towards the studio door and called for Richard who was still out on the porch.<\/p>\n

He heard me and I said, \u00a0\u2018\u2019Please call the ambulance at Highlander Point , I am having a heart-attack.\u201d ..In less than five minutes they were here!<\/p>\n

As I lay on the floor I felt little or no fear..the overwhelming experience was one of Gratitude for this long Life, for Family and friends, for Art and Yoga.<\/p>\n

This group of quilts made during this period are echoes of what helps us deal with Life..Wisdom and Strength.<\/p>\n

In no way do I claim to have mastered either of them, but like all of us I do consciously strive to grow closer as this Lifetime winds down.<\/p>\n

Penny Sisto<\/span><\/h4><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Penny Sisto ist eine international anerkannte K\u00fcnstlerin, die in den USA und im Ausland ausgestellt hat. Zu ihren internationalen Pr\u00e4sentationen geh\u00f6ren die Ausstellung einer Sammlung von Holocaust-Quilts im Torhaus von Auschwitz und eine Auswahl ihrer Sklaverei-Quilts, die 2008 im Royal Armories Museum in Leeds, England, ausgestellt wurden. Sie hat f\u00fcr ihre Kunstwerke zahlreiche Preise und Auszeichnungen erhalten und war Gegenstand zweier \u00f6ffentlich-rechtlicher Fernsehsendungen. Als Verfechterin sozialer Gerechtigkeit und des Friedens ist sie bekannt f\u00fcr die schwierigen Themen wie AIDS, Armut und Rassismus, die sie in ihren Werken thematisiert.<\/p>\n

Sisto wurde auf den Orkneyinseln vor der Nordspitze Schottlands geboren und lernte im Alter von drei Jahren das N\u00e4hen. Als Erwachsene arbeitete sie f\u00fcr das britische Entwicklungsministerium und nutzte ihre F\u00e4higkeiten als Hebamme, um in Gesundheitskliniken f\u00fcr die Massai, LuBukusu und Kikuyu in Ostafrika zu helfen. Ihre Zeit in Afrika inspirierte sie dazu, die Quilt-, Stick- und Applikationstechniken, die sie von ihrer Gro\u00dfmutter gelernt hatte, mit den Perlen- und Collagetechniken ihrer afrikanischen Freunde zu kombinieren. Dies f\u00fchrte zu dem unverwechselbaren Stil, der in ihren Arbeiten bis heute sichtbar ist.<\/p>\n

Penny Sisto erhielt zahlreiche Auftr\u00e4ge f\u00fcr Quilts, darunter vier Arbeiten f\u00fcr die Abtei Gethsemane, wo jedes Jahr zu Ostern und bei Trauerfeiern ein 28\u00d79 Fu\u00df gro\u00dfer Quilt mit dem Titel \u201eAuferstandener Christus\u201c h\u00e4ngt. Weitere Sammlungen mit Werken von Sisto sind: Sisters of Charity, Sisters of Loretto, Thomas Merton International Studies Center, Spalding University, Kennedy Family und das Peabody Essex Museum in Massachusetts. Zu den Stipendien, die Penny Sisto erhielt, geh\u00f6ren: Kentucky Foundation for Women, Indiana Arts Commission, Master Fellowship und New Directions and Southern Arts. 1993 wurde sie f\u00fcr ihre Arbeit zur F\u00f6rderung von Frieden und Gerechtigkeit mit dem Baha'i Peace Award for Arts Promoting World Peace ausgezeichnet.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>
