Earthen
I have always loved being outside hiking and backpacking. Because of that strong connection to nature, I changed my art-making habits. Instead of using toxic chemicals and harsh cleaners, I forage for clays and charred wood, grind them with a pestle/mortar, then mix them with walnut oil to make paint. I use organic cotton canvas, plant-based gesso, and recycled surfaces like cardboard. Making my own art supplies is soothing, like a meditation before I begin to paint. I make small sketches in the wilderness, then make large abstract landscapes and sculptures in my studio in Borden, Indiana. One of my greatest joys is sharing my art, with the hope that I might inspire others to love and protect the earth.
