Conventual Franciscan Friars – Province of Our Lady of Consolation Advocate for Compassion: We Stand in Solidarity with Annunciation House Against Texas’ Criminalization of Humanitarian Efforts
As members of the Conventual Franciscan Friars – Province of Our Lady of Consolation, we are deeply committed to living out the teachings of the Gospel through direct action and compassionate service. It is in this spirit that we wholeheartedly stand in solidarity with Annunciation House and our brother, Friar Jarek Wysoczanski, OFM Conv. , who selflessly serves as a full-time volunteer. Friar Jarek’s unwavering dedication exemplifies our collective calling to care for those on the fringes of society, embodying the very essence of seeing God in every person and living the Gospel through our deeds.
“For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me” (Matthew 25:35). This scripture not only inspires our actions but also frames our response to the challenges faced by those seeking refuge and safety. The recent endeavors by the Texas Attorney General to deter the humanitarian work of Annunciation House threaten the core of our mission — to offer solace, support, and dignity to the vulnerable and marginalized.
Annunciation House stands as a pillar of hope and compassion in the El Paso community, embodying the principles of Catholic social teaching by prioritizing human dignity and the common good. This ministry is a testament to the profound impact of living the Gospel through actions aimed at uplifting all humans, especially those most in need.
The unwarranted accusations against Annunciation House represent not only an attack on this vital mission but also an affront to the values we hold dear. Such actions, aimed at criminalizing the provision of essential humanitarian aid, starkly contrast with our faith’s call to welcome and assist the stranger among us.
Therefore, we unequivocally condemn the State of Texas’ efforts to criminalize these acts of kindness and solidarity. We call upon the State to abandon its campaign of intimidation and for the Biden Administration to protect the rights of migrants and to challenge the punitive measures of Operation Lone Star.
In solidarity with the friars who minister on the borderlands, specifically Friar Jarek, Annunciation House, and all those devoted to the service of humanity, we reaffirm our dedication to recognizing the divine in everyone and to living the Gospel through our actions towards all humans. Together, we renew our commitment to being instruments of peace, justice, and love, faithfully serving those on the margins of society and advocating for a world where compassion and understanding prevail.
