The dream of creating a vibrant and welcoming House of Studies for friars from around the world is coming to life at the San Damiano Friary in San Antonio, TX. This initiative, fueled by your generous support, is more than just constructing a building—it’s about nurturing a global brotherhood and fostering spiritual growth.

Why San Damiano Friary Matters

The San Damiano Friary serves as an international house of formation. It provides friars from the US, Mexico, Central America, and Zambia with a place to complete their initial formation. This unique environment enables them to live, pray, and study together, preparing to meet the growing needs of the Catholic Church. As fewer young men in the US enter religious life, these international friars are essential to sustaining our parishes and missions.

Transforming Lives

• Formation and Community: Imagine a young friar from Zambia, leaving everything familiar behind, finding a supportive community in San Antonio. These friars are not only learning but also preparing to enrich our faith communities with their experiences and dedication.
• Local Impact: Brother Pedro Lopez, recently ordained a deacon, was formed at San Damiano. Alongside him, friars Cristian Ubaldo and Juan Zuniga, both from the Province of Mexico, completed their theology studies here and are now serving parishes in Texas.

• 12-Bedroom Expansion: We have successfully completed a significant expansion, welcoming friars from Belgium and Mexico, with plans to host friars from Zambia soon.
• Sustainable Landscaping: Under the guidance of Friar Tim Unser, our grounds have been transformed into a sustainable and serene environment, perfect for prayer and reflection.

We aim to further enhance the San Damiano Friary by making it more sustainable. Our next steps include replacing gutters and soffits in the new expansion and installing solar panels. San Antonio’s abundant sunshine provides an excellent opportunity to power our friary sustainably.
