Friar Keith’s distinguished journey began as a parish priest at Saint Anthony’s in Lorraine, OH, before swiftly transitioning to serve at Toledo Central Catholic High School in Toledo, OH, where he notably contributed as Chess Coach and band chaperone. His tenure at Bellarmine College in Louisville, KY, was marked by his role as Housing Director, providing him with unique insights into student life.
His most cherished years were spent at Holy Cross Parish in Lansing, MI, where he embraced motorbiking and embarked on a pioneering career as a Cruise Ship Chaplain. This venture began in 1971, following an opportunistic response to a Friar newsletter advertisement, leading to decades of service that distinguished him as the most experienced cruise chaplain among American ship lines until the 2020 pandemic curtailed this service.
In addition to his maritime ministry, Friar Keith devoted three years to Saint Anthony’s Church in Lorraine, OH. He cherished his time as a tour guide at Saint Francis Basilica in Assisi, Italy, where he left an indelible mark on visitors with his unique and memorable tours.
His service extended to Jesup, GA, and subsequently to a significant 11-year tenure as Auxiliary Chaplain at Fort Stewart in Hinesville, GA, where his efforts during Operation Desert Storm earned him commendation. His adventurous spirit led him to experiences with both the Army and Navy, including memorable moments commanding a battle tank and simulating the operation of a submarine.
Following his military service, Friar Keith transitioned to chaplaincy within the Federal Bureau of Prisons, culminating in a reflective tenure at FCI Talladega and later at FCI Jesup, where his calm demeanor contributed to a riot-free tenure and meaningful impact on the prison community.
