Volunteer Docent Role and Requirements

Docents are an important resource for the Franciscan Arts Initiative at Mount St. Francis.

As a ministry of a non-profit organization, the Franciscan Arts Initiative relies on a dedicated group of volunteers to lead tours, help with operations, and run our many diverse programs and events. All volunteers must go through a volunteer orientation which includes training on youth interaction and protection. Additional training may be required for specific volunteer assignments. Active volunteers are asked to record a minimum of 6 hours of work per month, throughout the year with a two-year commitment.

Docents are among the first people to directly interact with visitors. Docents are stationed throughout the Mary Anderson Center Gallery and other exhibit areas and events to answer questions about the exhibits and engage with visitors. Shift availability depends upon current needs.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct guided tours
  • Be comfortable speaking to small and large groups of people of all ages.
  • Greet and welcome tour groups and visitors upon their arrival at the gallery or event.
  • Provide information to visitors and answer questions while stationed in specific areas.
  • Assist with special events, such as Music at the Mount and Cultivate.
  • Distribute literature regarding the Franciscan Arts Initiative and on-site programs.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Participate in a minimum of 2 three-hour shifts per month.
  • Have the desire to educate and inspire visitors to the gallery.
  • Capable of speaking to large groups.
  • Learn the history of the Franciscan Arts Initiative, Mary Anderson Gallery, and Artists.
  • Must be physically able to conduct tours as needed.
  • Participate in docent activities and training.
  • Have access to email for training and correspondence.
  • Must be able to provide their transportation.
  • Able to accept supervision and follow directions.
  • Prior knowledge or experience in arts volunteering is not required but would be an asset.

“Remember when you leave this earth, you can take with you nothing that you have received – only what you have given.”

-St. Francis of Assisi

Since the time of St. Francis and his first followers, our ministries, our ability to serve those in need, the education of new Friars, the care of our senior men all are possible with the partnership of our benefactors. Your generosity makes these stories possible.

PRAYER REQUESTS

For the Conventual Franciscan Friars of the Province of Our Lady of Consolation, Praesidium Accreditation is more than a seal of approval — it reflects our enduring commitment to creating environments of safety, accountability, and care in every aspect of our ministry.

Accreditation by Praesidium, an independent leader in abuse prevention, affirms that we have strong policies in place, regularly train friars and lay collaborators, and maintain clear, independent processes for responding to concerns. It is not a one-time designation but an ongoing commitment, maintained through annual reviews and continuous alignment with evolving national standards.

Through this process, we foster a culture of awareness and formation — equipping friars, staff, and volunteers not only to prevent harm, but to actively promote safety, healing, and trust. We actively engage those closest to our ministries — families, lay collaborators, and ministry partners — to help us recognize risks early, support safe environments, and uphold a culture of accountability.

Any report of misconduct is taken seriously, investigated by an independent professional, and reviewed by an external board. Our safeguarding practices are designed to protect the vulnerable, ensure transparency, and respond with integrity and care.

We invite anyone who has experienced abuse in a Church setting to come forward. Our commitment to justice and healing compels us to listen with compassion and act responsibly.
