Friar Ray Mallett’s life journey is a testament to his deep-rooted faith, dedication to the Franciscan Life. Born in 1949 and raised in Toledo, OH, Friar Ray grew up in a household where both Lutheran and Catholic traditions intertwined. His formative years were spent at The Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral, where he received his early education and was nurtured in his Catholic faith.
During his time at Central Catholic High School, friar Ray encountered the Conventual Franciscan Friars, who taught at the High School. Inspired by their commitment to service, he joined the Friars upon graduation in 1967, at age 17. He began his studies at St. Louis University, where he received a BA in Psychology in 1971. Following his Novitiate in Angola, IN, he continued his studies in theology, ultimately being ordained a Deacon in 1975 and a Priest on March 20, 1976.
The trajectory of friar Ray’s 50 years of priestly ministry reflects several diverse experiences. They began with working with youth: teaching, coaching, and school administration. He served as a Pastor in various locations, including Valley Station, KY; Hermosa Beach, CA; Aberdeen, Scotland; and Carey, OH and then briefly in Reno, NV; Castro Valley, CA and Pismo Beach, CA. But his true love of ministry was found by many transformative experiences as a missionary in Honduras, Scotland, and Vietnam. These experiences, especially ministering to the poorest of the poor, profoundly shaped his outlook on the Church and our world.
Now at 76 years old, Friar Ray resides in Dearborn Heights, MI. Due to health reasons and age, he is now retired but remains active through leading Pilgrimages, raising funds for the Missions and helping in nearby parishes. He remains grateful for the many people who have supported him and especially the missionary work of the friars.
